What is an ECA?
ECA is also called Education Credential Assessment. Whether you want to move to Canada on Study or PR Visa, ECA is mandatory. Its one of the most important part without which you can not submit an Express Entry application. ECA is simply an evaluation report which depicts the equivalency to Canadian Education. For example, if one has a Bachelors degree earned outside of Canada, then he/she has to go through the evaluating agencies to get the evaluation report which will tell if that Bachelors Degree is valid and what it is equivalent to in Canada. Some facts about ECA reports mentioned below :
- Every ECA report is valid for 5 years.
- You can have multiple ECA reports for same education, However only that particular ECA report will be accepted by IRCC which you will update in your Express Entry or PR application.
- You can use multiple ECA reports in single application. For example, One ECA for Bachelors degree from WES and second ECA for Masters degree from IQAS, although IRCC is specifically asking to update only your higher education. (Please note post graduate diploma is not considered higher education as its being evaluated as 1 year college/university diploma).
- ECA is accepted by both Federal and Provincial nominee programs. One does not require to get ECA from a specific agency.

- Usually ECA is applied for immigration purpose however after landing in Canada, one can upgrade/modify the same ECA report as per future plans. No new transcripts are ever required.
- Once ECA expires, contact the evaluation agency and pay a nominal fee to keep it active for next 5 years.
- ECA does not mean your credentials are recognized for Li-censure purpose in Canada, for that you will need to upgrade/modify the same ECA as per the licensing authority. For example, if one has an ECA for B.Ed for Immigration, after landing if he/she wants to apply for Teaching Certificate, that same ECA can be modified by evaluating agency.
- Employers are not asking for ECA reports post landing, while looking for jobs.
